Oh the thrill of the chase when you are successful at the end.
William T. Jarvis, son of Hendrickson Jarvis and Jane Lewis, was my success yesterday, so now I have to blog about it...and try not to be too wordy (but telling how things unfold is part of the fun).

At that point, in 2011, all I knew about William was that he was born in New York around 1840. I am not the only one who knew little about him. There is a great website called LongIslandSurnames.com that really is a treasure trove to anyone doing family history on Long Island. The info they have on William right now is as follows:
William J. Jarvis is the son of Hendrickson Jarvis and Jane Lewis.
b. about 1840 in Flushing, Queens, New York
d. 14 August 1876 in New Haven, Connecticut
no wife is listed, but 2 children:
1. Anne E. Jarvis b. Flushing
2. Alfred Hendrickson Jarvis b. Mar 1873 Flushing d. 4 Feb 1954 Flushing (with further info on Alfred's family)
The only sources listed for William were the 1850 census, his Civil Ward draft record, and his death record.
Due to a careful reading of Hendrickson's probate record (main thing was finding out William's middle initial was a "T" and not a "J" which helped to identify him in some records), I started tracking down the heirs. And one thing led to another.
Long story short, I was able to find an indexed marriage record for Alfred that states his parents were William Jarvis and Sarah Neserole. Further digging showed that Sarah's maiden name was Meserole, not Neserole (and some had indexed it as Mescold), and now this is some of what I have (to see everything I have at familysearch.org, William's ID number is GSYS-FSD):

William and Sarah are the parents of Annie E and Alfred Hendrickson:
1. Annie E. Jarvis
b. April 1867 New York
d. after 14 February 1935
m. on 20 April 1887 to Frederick Cooke (1866-1935)
Annie E and Frederick are the parents of:
1. Adele S. Cooke (1888- )
2. Gladys M. Cooke (1890- )
3. F. Guye Cook (1895- )
2. Alfred Hendrickson Jarvis
b. 10 March 1873 Flushing
d. 1954 New York
m. 1st 13 August 1895 to Susan/Susanna Bunting, widow of Thomas Bennett
m. 2nd 7 May 1924 to Alice O. Hilton, who was divorced from George Addison Terry.
Alfred and Susanna are the parents of:
1. Lillian Jarvis (1896-1963)
2. William Chapman Jarvis (1898-1899)
3. Mabel Jarvis (1908- )
4. Mildred Jarvis (1910- )
5. Kenneth Arthur Jarvis (1911-1989)
Alice O and George Addison Terry are the parents of:
1. George Terry b. 1914 New York
(in the 1940 census, George is listed as George Jarvis in the home of Alfred H and Alice O Jarvis, but in the 1925 and 1930 census records, he is listed as George Terry. I'm thinking he was not adopted by Alfred)
George Addison Terry had also remarried. His second wife was Pauline Mazeustor, widow of Mr. Brahndosoff.
Of course, I added new info, but I was also able to connect to people already in the database and fill out some of their info and families a bit.
Too much fun.
