John Henry RIDDLEBAUGH / REIDELBAUCH

John Henry RIDDLEBAUGH/
Johann Heinrick REIDELBAUCH
 b. 1824 Germany d. 1917 Ohio

My great-great grandfather John Henry RIDDLEBAUGH/ Johann Heinrich REIDELBAUCH (Henry) is an ancestor that I don't know if I'm ready to tackle...or if family members are ready for me to tackle. I will just say that he was not known to be a nice man and leave it there. Family History is about more than just names, dates, and places, it's about the people and who they were. But when you don't know any good stories, is it right to share the bad ones (when Henry isn't around to defend himself)?

I also have to add here that I am not the best researcher...sometimes my organization stinks. I think I have copies of some records...i.e. something regarding Henry's immigration (which is why though one source had 1851 as the year, I have 1852), but, of course, I can't find what I think I have. Frustrating. So, from what I can find, this is what I currently have available at my fingertips.

Anyway, this line of RIEDLEBAUCH has been traced back to 1676 (not by me, by the way) in Holenbrunn, Oberfranken, Bavaria, Germany. Henry arrived in New York on 24 April 1851 or 1852.  In the 20th Century History of Findlay and Hancock County, Ohio, 1910 there is an article on John Henry RIDDLEBAUGH (which I will type up and post later). Anyway, according to the article Henry was kicked out of Germany "on account of participating in the Revolution of 1849, he was expelled with other revolutionists, and came then to America."

The name went through just a few changes:

RIEDELBAUCH is Henry's father's name (and 3 more generations back)
REIDLEBAUGH is what was written on his marriage certificate and his 1900 census record (Pleasant Twp, Fairfield, Ohio)
RADEBAUGH in the 1860 census (Greenfield, Fairfield, Ohio)
RIDDLEBAUGH in the 1870 census (also Greenfield)
(I cannot find him in the 1880 or 1910 census)
and RIDLEBAUGH in a few cases as well. One of his grandchildren (Howard Hayes RIDLEBAUGH) chose to spell his name this way.

John Henry REIDELBAUGH is the son of Johann Michael RIEDELBAUCH (1781-1861) and Eva Barbara KOEGLER. (1785-1843). He was a blacksmith.

born 18 June 1824 in Wunsiedel, Oberfranken, Bavaria, Germany
immigrated to the US on 24 April 1851/2

married on 9 November 1856 to Ann Catherine SHOEMAKER. They were later divorced. She will have her own post next week.

died 25 July 1917 Whetstone Township, Crawford, Ohio
buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Galion, Crawford, Ohio

Henry and Catherine had 6 children together:

1-Jacob Albert RIDDLEBAUGH b. 28 July 1857 Lancaster, Fairfield, Ohio d. 17 December 1915 Bucyrus, Crawford, Ohio (m. 25 November 1888 to Catharine Augusta HELFRICH)

2-John Henry RIDDLEBAUGH, Jr. b. 28 September 1859 Burnstation, Fairfield, Ohio d. 28 September 1951 (yep, he died on his 92nd birthday) (m. 9 November 1882 to Almeda Elvira WISELEY--later divorced)--my great-grandparents

3-Therese Ellen RIDDLEBAUGH b. 10 March 1862 Fairfield county, Ohio d. 6 March 1949 (m. 4 September 1879 to John H. SNIDER)

4-Mary Elizabeth RIDDLEBAUGH b. 18 September 1864 Lancaster, Fairfield, Ohio d. 29 September 1940 Falls Township, Hocking, Ohio (m. 5 January 1888 to Charles ANGLE)

5-James Jonathan RIDDLEBAUGH b. 5 September 1867 d. 24 December 1945 (m. about 23 January 1892 to Olive Loretta NORMAN) interesting note: Olive's mother-in-law Ann Catherine SHOEMAKER many years later became her step-mother when Olive's widowed father, Mark NORMAN, married the divorced and then widowed Catherine.

6-Augustus Michael RIDDLEBAUGH b. 10 August 1870 Greenfield Township, Fairfield, Ohio d. 10 December 1936 Columbus, Franklin, Ohio (m. 10 December 1893 to Caroline Margaretha BUNZ)

I have not looked for Henry and Catherine's divorce record, but in the 1880 Catherine is already listed as the wife of John JOY (Ann C. JOY in Falls, Hocking, Ohio) with Michael (Gus) being with Catherine and the other 5 children are listed in 5 different households. As I mentioned above, I can't find Henry in the 1880 census. But Michael was born in 1870, so sometime between 1870 and 1880 the divorce must have been granted...

In the 1900 census (Pleasant Township District 19, Fairfield, Ohio) Henry REIDLEBAUGH is listed as an "inmate" (patient?) in the Fairfield County Infirmary and is listed as a widower...Ann Catherine didn't die until 1901. Of course, censuses (as I keep saying in just about every post) often contain inaccurate information.

According to a Riddlebaugh family history book put together by Kenneth McVICKER, Howard RIDLEBAUGH, grandson to the first John "Henry" RIDDLEBAUGH/Johann Heinrich REIDELBAUCH and Ann Alice Catherine SHUMACHER, said in a letter dated February 4, 1977 that Henry and Catherine were divorced and both remarried. I have found Catherine's 2 marriages, but not Henry's.

"Henry Riddlebaugh Passed away at the County Home at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening"

summary: aged 93 years and 1 month. The body was taken to the home of his son, James in Galion, where the funeral service will take place. Henry was born in Germany and was admitted to the county home on 4-27-1905. His wife died many yrs ago and his survived by 2 sons and a daughter.
One last note: "Our" Riddlebaughs weren't the only ones in Ohio. Perhaps the others were cousins? There is a "Jno. and Mary Reidlebaugh"  family living in Napoleon, Henry, Ohio in the 1880 census. I have corresponded with someone about this other family in the past, so it is not my John Henry (b. 1824 in Germany)...but "Jno" was born in 1828 in Germany. The 1880 census also has a John Riedlebauch living in Timber, Peoria, Illinois born 1834 in Germany. Also a Joseph (and Ida) Reidlebach b 1835 Germany living in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio in 1880...

Fabian Fred MOMNEY and Caroline BEAUREGARD updated

Fabian Fred MOMNEY (1838-1894)
 and Caroline BEAUREGARD (1841-1915)
Monroe County, Michigan and Lucas County, Ohio

True confession time--Fabian Fred MOMNEY may not really be named that...I found him named Fred in some records and Fabian in others. My understanding of the Catholics (specifically French Canadian Catholics?) was that they were called by their middle names, but their first names were used in official records. I don't believe I've seen his name officially written Fabian Fred anywhere...so I always feel a little guilty when I type his name, but I had to have some way to keep him straight. Maybe his name is Fred(erick) Fabian...

Fabian Fred MOMNEY, son of Hubert Gilbert MOMTMENY and and his first wife Marie DUBREUIL
    b. 19 February 1838 in Vienna, Monroe, Michigan
    d. 18 March 1894 in Oregon Township, Lucas, Ohio

    m. 14 June 1863 in Vienna Township, Monroe, Michigan to

Caroline BEAUREGARD, daughter of Hyacinthe BEAUREGARD and Felicity CAMPEAU
    b. 3 October 1841 in Monroe county, Michigan
    d. 16 June 1915 in Oregon, Lucas, Ohio

Caroline and Fred were the parents of 3 children:

1-Frederick MOMINEE b. 26 August 1866 d. 22 September 1961 (m. 1 June 1889 to Pearl VINCENT)--my great grandparents (click on Frederick's name to go to the post about him)

2-Caroline MOMNEY b. April 1865  d. 4 October 1931 (m. 22 January 1884 to Richard NAVARRE)

Caroline and Richard with their children Nora, Alpha, Louis, and Bill
This photo was labeled in the email as Alpha, but both census records I have say Alphia

Caroline and Richard (son of Robert J NAVARRE and Catherine GEYER) were the parents of:

     a-Gilbert NAVARRE b. 20 October 1884 d. 26 October 1884

     b-Elnora NAVARRE b. 25 March 1886 d. 29 July 1961 (m. Charles Walter MILLS 22 January 1907)

     c-Alphia NAVARRE b. 30 August 1888 d. 26 September 1958 (m. Ruby Marie GALLAGHER 10 May 1937)

     d-Louis Oliver NAVARRE b. 23 December 1891 d. 14 March 1984  (m. Edith Alexandra MATSON 16 July 1957)

     e-James Richard NAVARRE b. 5 August 1900 d. 28 June 1973 (m. Alma Lucile OWEN 20 May 1924)

     f-William NAVARRE b. 7 November 1903 d. 28 April 1976 (m. Leila BEALE 13 February 1924)

There is a possibility of another child:
Ethel NAVARRE b. and d. before June 1900?
I found her on a distant cousin's chart but have not seen any records. The 1900 census says Caroline NAVARRE had 5 children with 4 still living and the 1910 says 6 children with 5 still living. I have the deceased child as being Gilbert, but that doesn't mean Ethel wasn't Caroline and Richard's.

3-Tousont MOMNEY b. about 1867-1868 d. before the 1900 census

I have no info on Tousont other than his enumeration in the 1880 census. In the 1900 census Caroline MOMINEE had 2 children (an error) with 2 still living and in the 1910 census it says 3 children with 2 still living.

Just as there were several Fred Momneys running around, there were also several Tousont/Tousant/Toussaint Momney's running around. Fred had a half-brother by the name of Toussaint who was born 1868/1869 (plus there was another Toussaint born 1855...)

Fabian Fred had at least 13 siblings...6 full and 8 half-siblings. Fabian's mother, Marie, died when he was only 11-12 and it looks like his dad remarried soon after to a woman 20 years his junior, Victoria PRUDHOMME and they had 5 children. She was only about 6 years older than Fabian was. Victoria died in 1865 and Hubert married a 3rd wife, Emily PETERS/Amelia St. PETRE, soon after, and they had 3 children.

Fred was a farmer and it looks like he immigrated to Ohio in  between the births of his first 2 children, so in between April 1865 and August 1866. After Fred died, Caroline lived with her daughter Caroline and her family.

Obituary for Etta Johnnie (RUSS) MEIGS--paper and date of publication unknown, but since she died on 4 June 1925, the publication date for the obituary should be the 5th of June, 1925.

FUNERAL  BELOVED WOMAN HELD THIS AFTERNOON

At Parkview yesterday noon, occurred the death of Etta J. Miegs [sic], beloved wife of S. K. Miegs [sic], whose home is on Thirteenth street. Coming here from west Florida seven years ago, Mrs. Miegs [sic], in her quiet way, quickly identified herself with the life of the community, and with the active work in the Methodist church, of which she was a devout member. Retiring by nature, Mrs. Miegs [sic] has lived a somewhat secluded life, her time and thought being devoted to her husband and children. Nothing finer could be said of her than that she was a real mother, her splendid family of sons and daughters testifying to this in their fine loyalty and devotion to her.
The husband and daughters were at the bedside at the last, the sons being unable to get here.
Besides the husband there are left to mourn her passing eight children, Mrs. F. C. [sic] StrongMrs. C. M. Jarvis [sic], S. K. Miegs [sic], Jr., and James Miegs [sic], all of Marcane, Cuba; Mrs. T. G. Alsobrook, of Vilas; Mrs. Tom Perry, who lives on Bronson street, Palatka, and Grace and Lillian; also a sister, Mrs. M. McCormick, of Unadilla, Ga.
The funeral was held from the home this afternoon, Reverend Carpenter officiating. Quantities of beautiful flowers, tributes of love and respect banked the casket, and a large number of sympathizing friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Oak Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wendell Beasley, Hugh Padgett, Adrian Jacobs, Johnny Smith, Jo Lamon and Emory Bell.
The sympathy of the community goes out to the sorrowing husband and children in their hour of bereavement.

There are photos in grandpa's album of Grandma Carolie and Uncle Joel leaving for Palatka on May 27, 1925 and her mother died 8 days later, so yes, Carolie was there from Cuba.

MR. S. K. MEIGS DIES AFTER EXTENDED ILLNESS

Mr. Samuel K. Meigs, one of Palatka's most highly esteemed citizens, died early Saturday morning at his home on South 13th street following an extended illness. For a couple of weeks, his condition had been regarded as critical, so the news of his passing came as no surprise.
The deceased was born in South Carolina sixty-seven years ago, and there he was educated. Early in life he engaged in the naval stores business, and this he followed for many years in Alabama and Georgia. Since coming to Palatka, he had been book-keeper to various local concerns. Mr. Meigs was a man of deep piety, and was a faithful attendant upon the services of St. James and Carr Street churches, being an organizer and an officer in the latter. He was also a loyal member of the local F. & A. M. Lodge. Of a genial personality and a generous nature, he had many friends who held him in love and esteem. His wife departed this life about a year ago. He is survived by six daughters, Mrs. S. B. Strong, of Cuba; Mrs. T. G. Alsobrook, of Palatka; Mrs. C. M. Jervis, of Cuba; Mrs. Tom Perry, Miss Grace Meigs and Miss Lillian Meigs, of Palatka, and by two sons S. K. Meigs, Jr., and James Meigs, both of Cuba.
The funeral services were held from the family residence Sunday morning at 10 o'clock; Dr. W. J. Carpenter, the Methodist pastor, officiating. The interment was in Oak Hill Cemetery, where the commitment services of the Masonic Order were conducted.

It's been 14 years since we saw Dill [Lillian] Meigs. She's now Mrs. Shaw Buck, wife of coach of the Groveland School. They started going steady in 6th grade and never broke the habit. Bumped into her in front of a local department store. . . Can't see that she's changed much with passing years. . . Reminds us. . . If you want to be sweet at 40. . . You have to start practicing at 4.

A great article on the turpentine business that I found on line can be found at this link:

Family story time:

One nickname that my Grandma Carolie had was Dee Dee. I remember her telling me how she got this nickname...I just can't remember what she told me about it.

Her sister Edna married a doctor who went to Cuba and worked there. He is the doctor who delivered Fidel Castro and his brother Raul. If I remember correctly, the Castros' mother worked at the sugar plantation that Dr. Strong worked for. My grandfather knew the brothers' father, Ángel Castro, who was a big land baron in Cuba, and my grandfather hunted on his land.

Anyway, my grandma went to Cuba because her sister was there. It was there that she met and then married my grandpa, Charles "Curly" JERVIS, who managed a sugar plantation there (after years of being a surveyor).

My grandma told me that Pickles and Shaw secretly got married, and on their way home they stopped by the side of the road somewhere and buried their marriage certificate. They then went back to their respective homes without telling anyone for a while. (or was it Dot and Tom ... or Grace and Coy?...I'm pretty sure it was Pickles and Shaw)

As to how Pickles got her nickname. My grandma said that they went from calling her Lillian, and then Dill came out of that since it rhymed, so of course a pickle had to go with the Dill so it was Dill Pickle, and then Pickles.

Don't know what the problem was, but apparently there was no contact between Jimmy and my grandma (and presumably the rest of the family) as grandma had no info to give me about him. I found the info I have on him through searching on the internet.
